How I Use Bribery To Get Things Done

By February 25, 2013General

Bribery is one of the best tools around and I think more moms should use it.

Now before you run off to find your stash of feathers and your wheel barrow of tar, let me explain.

As many of you know, I love mornings. I get up an hour or so before the rest of the family so that I can prepare my heart, my plans and myself for the day. But I don’t get up at O’dark nothing just for the sheer fun of it.

Yes, I know the value of what I’m doing and I feel the benefit of my time with God, but there are some mornings when I. Just. Want. To. Sleep.

So I bribe myself. I know what I *want* to do, but I don’t always *feel* like it, so I bribe myself with something I *feel* like doing.

I’ve created a cozy little space in my office with a teapot, a basket of teas, and an assortment of snacks. Sometimes there is chocolate.

On those mornings when I *want* to get up but I don’t *feel* like it, I bribe myself with whatever works.

Lately, I’ve been bribing myself with a book.

I’ve rarely found a book I wanted to sit down and devour more than this one. If you’ve read this blog for long, you might know that I’m a total fangirl when it comes to Melanie’s writing. She is ridiculously hilarious, witty and wise.

I got this book right in the midst of a crazy busy couple weeks for me. It was all I could do not to chuck it all, grab some chocolate and coffee and just have a little readathon.

The kids’ could make their own dinner, right?

But I didn’t do that. Instead I used this tempting little treat to bribe myself to get all my work done….on time (take that procrastination). I used it to get up early a few mornings to make sure I had time for my regular routine and some extra writing I needed to do.

I’m happy to say that I’m finally through my busy couple of weeks and I got everything done well.

Bribery works.

To the rest of the world, I just looked like a diligent, hard working morning person, but now you know my little secret.

Need a Little Extra Incentive?

Melanie offered to give one of you a copy of her book! (By the way it hit the New York Times Best Seller list this weekend. How cool is that?)

To enter, just leave a comment sharing what thing you’ve been procrastinating that you want to get done. Maybe this book will be the perfect incentive to get started…and finished.

FYI: You can get Melanie’s book at your local bookstore or right now at Amazon.

I am utterly embarassed but willingly share that I have been procrastinating on meal planning for my family. I have been at stay at home mom for 6 years now and I just keep putting it off. Obviously we are surviving but I know it would make my life simplier and even a bit healthier. I even signed up for Plan to Eat a couple months ago. I went to your boot camp as well. Loaded the recipes but never did the last step. Seems so silly & simple
    but its true.

  • Alisa says:

  • Michele says:

I’ve been putting off filing the paper clutter on my desk!

  • Elizabeth Grave says:

I have been putting off waking up early and having my quite time with God. My husband and I are moving to Florida in two weeks and I have been telling myself that I can sleep in now and when I get to Florida I will start waking up early then also my husband wakes up at 6:30 in the morning and I really don’t want to wake up before him because he told me that if I got up earlier so would he and there goes my quite time because he will want to hang out when I want to have my quite time. I was doing the Hello morning Challange but after a miscarriage I have lost interest and been very passive and not forcing myself to get up. I get up early to let the dogs out, so I’m not tired but I just have no desire to stay up so I crawl back into bed and fall back to sleep quite easily. I hate it but can’t seem to shake myself out of this pattern.

  • Sarah says:

I need to make a bunch of appointments for both me and my daughter but I just keep putting it off. Don’t really even know why….

Cleaning out my 5 year-old son’s closet (which is full of BABY things!)

  • Sarah says:

I’ve been procrastinating cleaning my pantry/craft closet and getting it organized. I hate to do it, because it seems like every time I do, the kids destroy it within minutes.

  • Penny says:

We moved into our house 4 years ago. I still have 42 unpacked boxes in the basement waiting for me. And we have no doors on any room except the bathroom because we took them off to paint, and then…. things and stuff and life and procrastination happened. I could use a bribe. Thanks for the idea.

  • jill britz says:

procrastinating on my son’s baby book. i paralyze myself in not being able to do it perfectly how i envision it. *gag*. 🙂

  • Ugh. Procrastination. It is definitely my enemy. I often “bribe myself” too. Sometimes it even works!

  • C says:

We had company for Christmas. I shoved a lot of stuff where it didn’t belong so that my newly moved in home would look presentable. Weeelllll…its all still there. I just cant seem to muster the energy to take care of that. A bribe sounds really good at this point especially when it includes my two loves-reading a fantastic book and chocolate!

  • Robyn says:

Organizing my recipes! I keep printing and tearing them out of magazines but never filing or organizing them. Then I can never find the one I want when I’m ready to cook so I print another copy. The pile is getting out of control!

  • Lauren says:

I’m a horrible procrastinator! I’ve recently been procrastinating on cleaning and also on schoolwork. Yuck!

I have been putting off cleaning out my closet. I really dislike doing it. I keep telling myself I might find some treasure in there. But I haven’t started on it yet. I love your idea. I am going to have to try it.

  • Meagan says:

I really, REALLY need to declutter and organize our master bedroom. Actually our entire upstairs needs some lovin’. Downstairs is OK because I try to keep that looking half-way decent for company, but most people don’t make it up the stairs. And too often my piles from downstairs just end up in our bedroom with the door closed. Someone please tell me I’m not the only one who does this! 😉

  • Leah says:

The pile on my desk. Imagine a two foot stack of randomness that has accumulated over the last few years (spanning a remodel and the birth of our first child). I don’t even go into the room anymore. I love the idea of bribing myself-especially with a great book and chocolate.Thank you for the great post.

I have been procrastinating on making our annual digital photo scrapbook for 2012. This is something I do in December, and it’s almost March.

  • Amy says:

Sending out our baby announcements! :>)

  • Debbie says:

This is embarrassing ….. several boxes of misplaced Christmas ornaments still need to get put up in the attic. This is ridiculous – it will soon be March!!
Love to win the book 🙂

  • Sandy says:

I have found that I can procrastinate about just about anything. Lately, though I have been praying off organization projects in my room. I Tamy want it to new a haven for hubby and I, but out seems to be a catch all.

  • Wendy says:

Well, as the queen of procrastination, I have a huge get-it-done list. On the top of it right now is some writing I need to get done and a pile of papers that need to be graded–this week!

  • Deanna says:

My darling son is 8mo and my other darling son is 6 yo. There is not enough room to share all that has been procrastinated. Rather, I like to focus on the one or two things that did get done! I just need the world to pause for one week and maybe, just maybe I can tackle the disorder that is my life right now! But seriously, once little one is older, I look forward to adding “Morning person” to my list of successes. I love this blog. Thank you for truly being an inspiration. Blessing to you – Dee

  • Karen H. says:

We moved last fall and I still need to finish hanging pictures. Every room has pictures leaning against the wall and it drives me crazy. But obviously not crazy enough to take the time to hang them!

  • Christine says:

Wow, I’ve been feeling this nudge today… and your topic today hits it on its head!

I’ve been procrastinating change, making positive changes in my life because of old mindset. Working to change mindset, thoughts, into actions… because my “good intentions” of spring cleaning are not getting done like I’d really like to. And there’s “stuff” behind the stuff where I’ve been stuck for awhile. Would love to read this book; thanks!

  • Debi says:

My husband, two sons and myself have lived in South Africa for two and a half years serving with Jabulani Africa Ministries. WE LOVE WHERE GOD’S PUT US to train and disciple young people to impact their own communities with tools of servant leadership. It’s unbelievable how much our shelves and closets & floor space is filling up more and more with “stuff”. I’m not sure where all of it is coming from but like I said, I have two sons who collect (rocks, twigs, whatever they find). I’ve been procrastinating going through all the clutter and giving it away! I need to just give whatever continually is left out so we can be good stewards of what we need to have and let others benefit from all the other “stuff”! HELP!

  • lenka says:

I want for months to clean and organize a spare room that we have. It’s just a storage of everything and keeps getting worse since there is no more order anyways…;-)

  • melanie says:

Dishes! Sometimes I give myself a little treat after they are done.

I had also been procrastinating on getting some seeds and plants in pots. I finally did it yesterday and realized that it took far less time and effort than I expected.

Procrastination is evil that way – it often makes tasks seem like they will require far more time and energy than they actually do. Or that we shouldn’t start a task until we have time to complete it (like that much free time ever comes our way. Please!) Procrastination is mean…

    Down with procrastination!

  • Michelle R. says:

Ugh! I’ve been procrastinating on getting our basement pantry space de-cluttered and re-organized.

  • Judy says:

in the “immediate” the dishes in the dishwasher …the clean clothes folded … AND put away … and then there’s those bags of clothes to donate that have been living in the back of the van ….

  • Ashley S. says:

Last night my procrastination caused an anxiety attack… I’m not sure what’s more upsetting — the pile of work for my home, work and small business that was in front of me (I haven’t seen my reading chair in three weeks… my laundry ate it) or the fact that it’s my own fault. I’m realizing that procrastination is ugly for so many reasons, It costs money (late fees), more time that the task should’ve taken (considering the time spent procrastinating + the time spent stressing over the fact that the task isn’t done + the time to actually do the task), and can take a toll on health (stress = headaches, chest pains, etc)… praying for discipline to stop the cylce.

  • Dawn says:

  • I’ve been procrastinating cleaning our laundry room!

  • Faith Still says:

I need to write a giveaway post this week and I need to fill out my son’s preschool application.

  • Michelle says:

This is such perfect timing! I have tried off and on for years to be an early riser but always seem to fall ofd the wagon after a few months when ” busy” time comes up and I still get up early but not for me, not to do the quiet things that focus my day. But bribery is a GREAT thought!! Thank you for all of your encouraging words for those of us who see motherhood as our primary profession!!

  • Rebekah says:

I have been procrastinating organizing my basement…it is out of control!
Can’t wait to read this book!

  • Carol White says:

I almost procrastinated about leaving a comment, but thought that would never do!

I’ve been procrastinating on making my meal plan! I know. I was a ninja, but now I am a backslidden one. Do I have to return my black belt? Am I mixing martial arts? I’m trying to get my recipes in. I think I’m afraid if this doesn’t work I’m doomed, so I don’t want to know if it doesn’t work….I have a bit of a perfectionist tendency.

I’ve also been procrastinating with getting things on ebay and craigslist, making a headboard, finishing my scrapbook for 2012 and starting the one for 2013, reading books that are piling up on my Nook and Kindle….

What aren’t I procrastinating about? Perhaps that would be easier to answer!

  • Daniella Peterka says:

It’s all I can do to force myself to take care of weekly chores when caring for a 3 year old and 8-month old. I have been procrastinating the deeper chores around the house…dusting- yeah, that’s not a weekly chore unfortunately; mopping, cleaning windowsills and ceiling fans, even cleaning the windows-I’m pretty sure there are smudges still around that are from when my 3-YEAR OLD was an 8-month old!!!) I always procrastinate on reading my pharmacy journals … and then the next one comes in and gets added to the pile! Nothing beats a free bribe, and it felt so good to clear that stack off my desk!

  • Robyn says:

  • Tricia from Iowa says:

I really enjoyed the plan to eat class you lead. I was really procrastinating on meal planning but that really helped a lot. I have been meal planning every week since the class. Things are going well. I try to enter one new recipe (or one recipe of my regular recipes) every week.

Now I really have been procrastinating reorganizing my home office and craft area. Maybe this incentive will get me started.

So many things… I’m pregnant and homeschooling my other three kids while helping with wedding prep for my brother, so the housework has been put off, the baby preparations, even the grocery shopping!

  • beth says:

I have been putting off many things, the 2 that nag at me the most are emptying out our bonus room and redoing our foundation landscaping.

  • Judy Cannon says:

I have been procrastinating entering my last THREE months of entries into my budget…UGH!!!

  • Sarah says:

Clearing off a bunch of short projects which would put away a ton of stuff. I just can’t seem to get to it!

  • Heather says:

I am putting off getting up early. I homeschool and it is so tempting to stay in bed until I *have* to get up. . .

  • Kim S says:

I need to clean out my pantry. Overwhelming.

  • Cali says:

I need to declutter and organize the baby’s room so he can actually sleep in there.

  • Trisha says:

I have a pile of baby toys in my living room that need to be moved to the storage closet…doesn’t sound so hard when I type it, but they’ve been an eye sore for a few weeks! Kat, I totally respect your discipline not to cheat when you bribe yourself. Thanks for the encouragement!

  • Tammy E. says:

I would love to get my girls’ baby books finished.

  • Kari R. says:

I’ve been procrastinating on packing. We’re moving next month, and I should start getting little boxes packed here and there; but I’m a perfectionist (oh, how that hurts to see in print!) and I dislike living in limbo – not everything packed neatly in a box, not everything put away it’s place. That said, I know my stress will grow in direct proportion to the longer I wait to start packing and the closer moving day comes. More stress means a harder time being a Nice Mama…so excuse me while I go pack a box.

  • Jen says:

Reading…I love to read but have felt so busy that I haven’t been able to just relax and read for so long! I think I need to start in little chunks of time…

  • Meghan says:

I am really having a hard time organizing and cleaning my office to the point that it remains clutter-free. It seems to be the overflow room to put things when we need to stash things. Every time I try to organize it, I feel like it just gets cluttered up again.

  • Larissa says:

What ONE thing (?!!) have I been procrastinating about getting done?!! LOL! What I haven’t been procrastinating about would generate a more manageable list unfortunately!! … My biggest job though, would have to be going through my room and deciding once and for all what to keep, and what to get rid of – decluttering. When you consider that I am, in fact, sharing my room with my almost-5yo daughter, and that I haven’t actually properly gone through my stuff since I was 8 months pregnant … you can pretty well imagine that I have a LOAD of things to go through. There have been times when I’ve been able to work through select areas … but then time goes by, things get busier, and more things get added to the areas I’ve already worked on … and all the hard work gets lost again. … The other BIG things I tend to procrastinate over would be my uni work – actually getting on top of it before I become too overwhelmed and it all begins to feel too hard – and working on the sewing projects that *have* to be done by a certain (close) time … Oh, and making sure I am on top of my meal prep so I don’t just go for the quick, unhealthy option … I could go on 😉
Thanks for the suggestion of bribing oneself to get things done. I have a stitching retreat in just over a week, and should really use this as incentive to get on top of a few things 😉 Your post was the reminder that I needed!!

  • Amanda says:

I need to go to bed earlier–does bribery work for that??

  • Meriam says:

Hi Kat! I love reading your posts and your recommendations. I’ve been procrastinating on decluttering my home. Never thought of bribery to get me going though. Would love to read Melanie’s book. Thanks for sharing. 🙂

  • Michelle Zang says:

I purchased a pretty red journal a couple months ago and have been procrastinating about writing that very first entry. I keep thinking I’ll do it before bed but I am always too tired. I need to do it first thing in the morning (before the kids get up).

  • Beth says:

Love this! I like to call them rewards, but call them what you want, it’s all the same! Most things we do in life is because of the outcome, and sometimes the outcome needs some extra excitement (sure my bedroom being decorated and painted would be nice but a little extra insentive may help).

Would I work full time just because I like the work to be done? Or is it because the give me a paycheck? Call it reward, bribe or payment but we all need a little extra push sometimes!

  • Thankful says:

I have a very long, intimidating list, actually…we are moving overseas in less than five months. Oh, did I mention I’m 12 weeks pregnant and very sick, too?? 😉 Yeah, I could definitely use some bribery in my life to get me going right now. Thanks so much!!!

  • Kimberly says:

I am leaving a comment just to say that I love to read books with fun titles like “sparkly green earrings” but even though I have written many great titles have never written the book to go with. AND I never win these things. . . but here’s to not giving up.;)

  • Alyson says:

I would love this book so I can bribe myself to continue advertising for my new business as well as become more consistent with my own personal practice (I’m a concert violinist), and yoga practice.

  • Jennifer O says:

I really need to clean out the garage, but the task seems overwhelming.
I’ve heard so many positive comments on this book; I’m looking forward to reading it.

  • AlyssaZ says:

Can I confess to procrastinating life?? I have a new baby who has recently decided to fight everything, food, sleep, snuggles. It is so much easier to let life pass in a blur and put everything off until later!

  • Erin V. says:

truly cleaning (not just picking up) my house and getting it ready for guests…

  • Cori says:

I’ve been putting off making a phone call to a difficult family member even though I know she needs to be loved on…Picking up the phone right now.

Putting the laundry away after it is folded… ugh! Love your idea!

Taxes before we need to file an extension…again!

  • Sarah says:

I’ve been procrastinating starting the memory book for my daughter’s first Christmas…. just one more thing that makes me a bad mom! 🙂

  • Jen says:

I *want* to get some sewing done. In particular, a Hello Kitty dress that I’ve been “working” on for my 3 year old, for quite some time now.

  • Becky says:

I *want* to get my whole house clean. as in be able to use my guest/sewing room as a guest/sewing room instead of my catch all room. I have been getting rid of things that are not used often and want to actually do it more. Its hard to get the house clean, take care of the 2 kids, AND be a happy loving wife all at the same time. Thanks for the encouragement!

  • Laura says:

I’ve been procrastinating finishing my son’s baby book (he’s 3) and now he has a little brother. Oy! 🙂

  • Amanda says:

Going to bed early to have my morning quiet time with God 🙁

  • Danielle says:

I put off most things…but right now I am putting off folding the two loads of laundry sitting in my room!

  • erin says:

I’ve been putting off cleaning the floors. I know, it’s terrible, but it seems like the minute I sweep and mop them, they’re dirty again. Sometimes I wonder what the point is!

  • Sue Speir says:

Finishing a scarf I have been knitting forever!

  • jordan says:

what have I not been procrastinating on!? Procrastination is something I’ve been struggling with FOREVER!!! Some of the major things that I procrastinate on are:
    1. My email… I check my email everyday, I am on it constantly… but for some reason I can never get it done to 0 un-read messages. Right now I have 321, seriously?
    2. Homework… I’ve gotten better at it, now that I have about 5 classes. over the winter session I had only 1 class and the homework was due Sunday night at midnight, yep I would start it on Sunday morning.
    3. Laundry… I don’t wash my laundry until I run out of work shirts… hmm which reminds me that I better go check to make sure I have one for tomorrow.
    4. Getting my room all clean, perfect, and organized…. I love to organize and rearrange my room. I get all motivated to do it get about half way done, then tell myself I’ll get back to it tomorrow…. (p.s. that was 4 days ago)

  • Laura says:

I’m the worlds worst procrastinator! I just now read this email. I put off everything until the very last minute. I didn’t finish my sons Christmas stockings until they were almost 7. One of them I haven’t even completely finished! I have a ton of books to read and I love to read. I just always feel there are things to do and I ‘have’ to do them before I do anything else. I just want the world to stop for just a few minutes so I can catch up!

  • Reagan says:

I have been putting off deep-cleaning my apartment! It is a HUGE mess!

  • Bridget K says:

Getting my annual mammo. I called today and got in! Yay me, yay girls.

  • Keri vaught says:

I need to decluttering my closets. They have been seeping into the other areas of my house!

  • Ann says:

I’ve been putting off making a rag quilt. I had fun collecting old jeans and denim what-nots to cut up for this project. Yes. There it is sitting waiting for me to begin. I also have been putting off learning how to use Quickbooks. I hate learning new software, but it is a necessary evil for my business and my husband’s sanity.

  • Ellen says:

I procrastinate going to the Y every. single. day! It’s a matter of just putting on my shoes and grabbing my keys – how is this so hard?!

  • Deborah says:

    Where to even start?! Ugh.

  • Julie says:

i’ve been putting off repainting the bathroom and some touchups in the kitchen for oh, a year or more. yikes.

  • Rochelle says:

With baby #4 coming in 3 months, I desperately need to go thru all the totes of clothing and simplify/purge in preparation. We need to make space too, as our family is a bit crowded in our home. Seems like I put off doing it b/c the other 3 need my attention, and there are so many other things on my to-do list.

  • Amanda says:

I have been procrastinating on purging our home. Our lives would probably be much more simple if I purged half the stuff in our home!

  • Annie says:

Clean up paperwork, de-clutter, and simplify… AGH, just writing about it stresses me out…

  • Tara says:

    Clean my office!
