Hello Mornings! Winter 2011 Challenge Details

Hello Mornings Button
(Hi! Kat here. I just wanted to introduce today’s guest writer to those of you who may be new. Her name is Michelle and the Maximize Your Mornings Challenge is her brainchild. I had the honor hanging out with her at the Relevant Blog Conference and I just adore her. Many of you already do too. Without further ado, here’s Michelle with the details of the new Challenge.)

Welcome to the Maximize Your Mornings Challenge!

Some of you have been plugging along faithfully since we started. Others are ready to jump in- maybe for the first time.

Whoever you are- whether you rise when the rooster crows or are rolled out of bed by your hungry kids-

Today is a crisp, white page in your notebook. Crease open the binding and take a moment to savor the promise of a fresh start.

Winter Challenge Details

We’ve made some exciting changes to the Challenge, increasing the amount of support and switching things up a little bit.

The Winter Challenge will run through March 25th. Look for new posts here every Friday.

New for 2011, we are adding an accountability component!

For those of you using Twitter to say #hellomornings, we have rounded up some wonderful women who will be assigned to encourage and support specific participants. This way, no one can drop off the face of the earth without someone missing them.

We call these women Accountability Captains, because… well – we’re dorks and it sounded cool.

We’re still assembling our AC’s, but we want to give a shout out to Katie, Andie and Lara for eagerly joining our band of merry women.

We are also working on expanding this challenge on Facebook, so be sure you like Inspired to Action!

Twitter Chats

As if Accountability Captains weren’t enough to make you stop and join Twitter, we will also be hosting monthly Twitter Chats!

These Chats will allow you to meet & mingle, get lots of encouragement and ask questions you may have about implementing a morning routine.

Weekly Guests

You will also get the chance to hear from other participants about their personal experiences through our guest writers. We hope you gain lots of useful tips for creating a morning routine of your own.

How To Join

If you are joining us in this round of the Maximize Your Mornings Challenge, simply leave a comment below letting us know you’re in.

  • Angie says:

I am in ladies! I am looking forward to it!

  • Shannon says:

I’ve been doing better recently, but extra motivation/accountability never hurts! The difference in my day when I get up and spend time with God is nothing short of AMAZING. God is really meeting me each morning, and I’m loving my “Bible in 90 Days” reading. Learning SOOOO much.

Not on Twitter, but will continue to follow on FB! 🙂

  • Melissa says:

    I’m in! I’ve been hanging around #hellomornings for a while now…I’m liss524.

  • I’m SO in!

and… I should probably join Twitter so I can reap the full benefits, right? I’m intimidated by Twitter. I don’t get it. I get Facebook (and I’m a fan) but, Twitter I don’t get. But, this weekend, I shall TRY NEW THINGS! 🙂

    • Kat says:

Right now Twitter is the happening place in the mornings, but I do hope it will catch on at Facebook too, so feel free to jump in wherever you’re most comfortable.

  • Sarah says:

I am in. The Accountability Captains are a genius idea. Like another commenter said, this supports my 2011 one-word resolution…GROW.

  • Patti says:

Yay! Yes, I’m still in! I have been doing it for several months but the one thing I have not been able to figure out is the exercise part. Looking forward to more accountability!

    • Kat says:

Frankly, the exercise part has been the hardest for me too since the days have gotten shorter. Running is what I love to do, but I don’t like running in the dark so I’ve had to make some compromises.

I think the Twitter chats will be a great place for us all to get new and fresh ideas. I can’t wait!

  • Vickie says:

I am in. I struggle with consistency so I need this.

  • Ginny says:

Ok, ok, you’ve convinced me! I’m in! I even signed up for Twitter, but what on earth do I do? Must look for a Twitter tutorial!
Seriously, though, glad to be joining up, I really need to get back on track. Will there be accountability captains for our babies to make sure they sleep all night? 😉

    • Kat says:

      Ha! I wish!

I’ll see about working on a Twitter tutorial this weekend. To join in just do a search for #hellomornings and save the search. Then you’ll see what everyone is saying. If you add #hellomornings to your updates, we’ll see them. And feel free to ask questions about Twitter there too, we’ll all be glad to help.

  • Anna says:

I’m in for the first time. I’m going to work on my plan this weekend and start Monday.a

  • Daphne says:

I am so in!!! I have been trying to do it on my own lately and it will be awesome to have all this support!

  • Audra Marie says:

I’m joining this challenge. 🙂 This will be good for me. I think. Just kidding, I know it will. 🙂

  • Stephanie says:

I want to join the challenge!!!!

  • MaryBeth says:

I’m going to give this early mornings thing another shot. I am cutting back my computer/ blog/ FB time already so I’ll skip Twitter accountability for now.

Anyone want an early morning quick email buddy for some accountability instead?

  • Zeljka says:

Hi from Croatia, Europe! Can I join? I need this, I love getting up, and this keeps me inspired 🙂

  • Pam in Missouri says:

I’ve been silently following your blog for a couple of months now. I’m finally ready to jump in with this process. I just printed the book (frugally at half size) and I’ll be going to bed at 10pm.

  • NatalieW says:

    I’m in!

  • Kristy says:

I would love to join in! Every day that I get up and have my time it helps create a meaningful day. I am typing my bedtime resolution here to make it official: 10:30pm. Hope it’s okay that I do this through Facebook.

    • Kat says:

It’s definitely ok. Things are a still a little quiet over there as I welcome everyone in the morning, so I’d love it if you’d jump in and say hi!

  • Jenn says:

Count me in! I’ve been trying to do this on my own and failing a lot, so I could use the accountability.

  • Krista says:

I just started this week, so I am jumping into this whole-heartedly. This commitment/accountability is just what I needed! THANK YOU!!!

  • Courtney says:

I’m in! I already get up early (nearly) every morning to enjoy my quiet time with God, but I look forward to learning tips here to improve my routine and keep me motivated. Thank you!

  • Carrie says:

I’m in! I started waking up early (again) with the start of the new year….after all the snowed-in days of course. Looking forward to the accountability factor to keep me going though! 🙂

  • Done the challenge once before, joining in again for extra motivation and accountability -especially with bedtime and exercise! Thank you lovely ladies for heading this up! {muah}

  • Wendy says:

So glad I saw the retweet about this…count me in, please!

  • @michellebygrace says:

Wow!! It’s amazing to see how many of you are joining the challenge! I’ve already followed a bunch of you on Twitter, but let me know if I missed you.

  • Deedee says:

Rebooting my mornings – it seems like I’m off-track as often as I’m on these days 🙁 Hopefully the new challenge will keep me going!

  • Ellen says:

I’m in…actually found this from the original challenge…and posted there…:) so either I’m really early or really late, I am here.

And as I said in the other post, I was just thinking about how off my days are when my 21 month old wakes me and I am just trudging through the day.

I need to have my A-game on, right from the start.

  • I am SO in!!!! I did this in July and I loved it….then somewhere near September, I started staying up too late. I love the time with the Lord, when all I can hear is Him. I woke up at 5ish this morning (eyes looked at the clock at 4:51, body got out of bed at 5:17. Nothing beats QT w/ Abba before the day gets rolling! I flourish with accountability. I have not really understood Twitter very well in the past, but I’m gonna try again. Yay for MYM Challenge….thank you for sharing what God has given you!

  • Jennifer says:

I’m in! Momma with baby. I know it won’t be perfect but I need Jesus!

  • Emily B says:

I’ve been working up to it this week after I saw the heads-up that the challenge was coming back–so far I’ve done two days pretty well! I’m not much of a Twitterer but am going to give that a shot to keep daily accountability.

  • Cherie says:

Hi Michelle and Kat! I was doing so well and I have fallen off the wagon! I need to get back into the challenge to get back into my early mornings! Count me in…..again!

  • Beth says:

I’m in! I am making my “get out of bed” a realistic 6 am. Just one question. I am on the East coast. Will be traveling to the West coast soon for a few days. I DO get to adjust for the time change, right?

  • Crisa says:

I’m in! Thank you so much for providing support!

  • Lezli says:

Total night owl here… but I’m gonna try it! I’m in—with some trepidation, but even more excited expectation about how great this is going to be for my family and me!

  • Misty says:

Alright, I’m in. I’m doing this (MxM) in conjunction with a 100 day calendar. I have three goals for the next 100 days. 1: do MxM each morning, 2: go to bed by 10pm each night, 3: No TV. I can watch TV when I’m old, but right now I want to do other things… Thanks for making this! I am in desperate need of accountability.

    Good luck everybody!

    • Kat says:

      “I can watch tv when I’m old…”

Love it! Glad you’re joining us, Misty.

    • Carrie says:

I’m also doing the 100 day calendar and loving it! Along with MYM, my new habits for the 100 days (and beyond!) are 1)completing my Bible Reading plan for the day, 2) drinking 64 oz water daily, 3) and reading from one of the 10 books on my nightstand before bed! (I have so many I want to read that I’ve been unable to decide which one to start with…and that’s left me with just staring at them and reading nothing!)

      God bless your efforts Misty!

  • Julie says:

I’m in! The only problem is that I don’t twitter (tweet?). Maybe I’ll give it a try.

  • Betsy says:

    Can I join you?

  • Janet says:

I’m in, too. Considered this before but now have decided there is no better time than now to add another good habit!

  • Kathleen says:

I’m in. I so need this right now!

  • Amanda says:

I’ve been putting this off for a while, but I think I am ready to commit!

  • Good Mornin’ Kat & Michelle!

    1st . . . THANK YOU 😀

I Need this MYM Challenge! Ok, my body is already starting to form painfull objections to early Mornin’s that once included Facedown time (I have a body that is a CarVsSemi/Brain&softTissueInjury affected). However! . . . The very mention of ‘Accountability Captains’ or ACs got my heart to at least pump a bit harder in memory of a ‘Good Mornin’ Glory! 🙂 Woman. She got up, worshiped, studied, wrote & posted about her Quiet Time with the LORD each M-F Mornin’ on this Womens’ Devotional Encouragement for a whole Year’. And mostly JOY-FULLy!
I Unashamedly Testify to wearing my ‘Dork Hat’ Proudly. LOL! So Ladies… I’m Jumpin’ or honestly, Fallin’ All In for this MYM Challenge Knowing God has provided the AC (whoever she is) that I’ve been lookin’ for! Oh, & I have no doubt that my Family & Ministry will Thank U 2! 😀

Blessings Prayed for U both ~ Have a JOY-Full Day!
    Love Ya, Susie 🙂

  • Lesli says:

I’m officially joining – so excited about improving my morning routine! I joined the twitter group under the name @youhearmyvoice.

  • Sarah says:

Not sure if I’m “re-signing” up, but I’m back!!

  • […] Well, wow! I’m so excited about the wonderful response to the Maximize Your Mornings Challenge! […]

  • Miriam says:

Hello ladies, I am taking this challenge. I used to be good early riser (helps that I am a morning person generally) but have fallen off and on from the ‘routine’ of quiet time and breakfast alone (a must for grumpy moms like me who are hungry all the while helping kids get dressed and preparing breakfasts for them). I won’t be joining twitter for now but will like the facebook link. I feel like I am already pulled in too many directions and can’t get enough done. Facebook, blogs, emails are more than enough as it is so tempting for me to keep clicking my hours away to new and newer blogs, and websites. Perhaps in the future when I have a better routine down I might join the twitter world Thanks for the challenge! (I accidentally wrote this comment on an older “Max Morn Chall” back in 2010, so I just copied and pasted it here, also my blog site came out wrong there- the one here is correct!)

  • Abby jartos says:

Hope I’m not too late (wow, tardiness doesn’t bode well for early mornings, does it?)! Ready to give my family the best of myself, and have come to the conclusion that a head start in the morning is the only way to accomplish it! Glad to have the help, as I’m a dyed-in-the-wool night owl. 🙂

  • Jennifer says:

I’m in. I’m a little apprehensive, but I SO need this. And I guess I will give in and become a “tweeter” so I can have the extra accountability.

  • Melissa says:

I’m in as of tomorrow!! I enjoyed watching your grumpy video. It was me!!!

  • Kelly says:

I’m in, again. Had some success last time, but I was nursing a baby who liked to nurse ALL night. Now she’s sleeping and I think I’ll have more success 🙂

  • Chandra says:

Is it too late to join? If not, I want to start! 🙂

  • aubrey says:

ok i’ve been hit or miss the last several months but i’m committing now to join you all officially. excited for it. i’ll be following on twitter as well. would love an accountability captain. thanks!

  • Jennifer says:

God’s timing is so perfect – Kat, your blog came to me at the perfect time! Earlier this month, my 4 month old baby girl started sleeping through the night (woo hoo!) and so I have been thinking how great it would be if I got up early to do a devotion and then start reclaiming my pre-baby body back at the gym – but it was just that – a thought. Then I heard you speak at my MOPS group at Northwest and it was exactly what I needed to hear and the encouragement to start putting that thought into action! Thank you for these practical tools and never before have I wanted to join Twitter until now! I am excited to start and be part of this challenge!

    • Kat says:

What a fun story! I love how God introduces people to one another at just the perfect time. I’m thrilled you’re joining us!

  • I’m in. I’m nervous. I don’t twitter well. But I”m in!

  • Deanna says:

I’m in…and I’m SO excited!! I really need the accountability, and I know I found you for a reason. I’m in Austin and have been following your blog for a month or so, Kat. I am about to sign up for the Mom Heart conference in Dallas, so hopefully I’ll get to meet you and some awesome ladies then. Blessings to you and your family!! 🙂

    • Kat says:

Oh yay! Email me if you do sign up for momheart and I’ll make sure to and you info about our meet up at the conference!

  • Darlene says:

I’m in. I’m taking the plunge and I’m committing.

  • Jenny says:

I’m in! I so need encouragement! I’ve been trying to get up about 1.5 hours before my kids get up but I’m not doing well in this area. Hopefully to be encouraged and inspired by you guys. I will try my best to do my part as well. Thanks!

  • Shawntele says:

I have been watching the #hellomornings feed for a couple months now and am excited to be joining in with you all!

  • Joe says:

I must be crazy… but I’ll give this challenge another go 🙂

I say crazy because I have a 4 month old at home! (and a 2.5 yrs). Which means my days are NOT predictable. Sure, they are better than when she was newborn, but although she naps, it’s never really at the same time each day yet, and her “bedtime” highly depends on her naps – and if she decides she would prefer to cluster feed until 1 am that evening or not.

Nevertheless, I strongly believe that if I get some “me” time in the morning, I will be a better mother to my girls, because I’ll be able to get those little indulgences – and chores, too, mainly computer-related chores & home management planning stuff – out of the way before the fam gets up, and be so much less distracted during the day. I will be able to give them my full attention – or more of it anyway 🙂 I won’t have all these tasks that needs to be done nagging me – like the weekly meal plan, the grocery list, filling away the recipes, checking my e-mails, seeing if new playgroups have been scheduled, printing and organizing activities for my oldest (I make her lots of file folder games and fun activities, we plan on homeschooling, so we don’t homeschool yet, but I use a lot of homeschool planning tricks to organize her crafts and activities to do – otherwise we end up starring at the wall wondering what to do if I don’t have a general plan!).

So I’m thinking, if I nurse DD2 around 9 pm, and go to bed around 10 pm – 7 hours brings me to 5 am. Actually, I did it the other way around 🙂 The kids wake up typically around 7:30 am, and I know just 1h of me time won’t be enough – by the time I fixed breakfast, woke up, and checked my e-mails, it’ll be over. I can be slow in the morning… 🙂 Plus there’s always the odd times when one of the girls wake up at 6 or 6:30. So I’m thinking 5 am might work, and when I counted back 7 hours it brought me to 10 pm and that seems reasonable!

Disclaimer: I’ll be gentle on myself. I do have a 4 month old around. If she nurses and cluster feeds until 1 am – obviously we scratch the next morning wake up. If the girls decide the day is so marvellous they need to start it at 6 am – we’ll try again tomorrow. If DD2 wakes up 5 times in the night – sleep in a bit. I’ll still probably have more early days than less, which means things won’t pile up as much anyway. And I’m always more productive in the morning than in the evening – which is often spent cluster feeding from dinnertime to bedtime, anyway. Very, VERY frustrating trying to get things done in that time period.

    Good luck to everyone! 🙂

(I’m setting up my Twitter – I’ll be joining on #HelloMornings too! I’m assuming the challenge starts officially next Monday, Jan 31st?)

  • Niki says:

    I’m in! 🙂

  • Count me in! Again…I signed up before but didn’t stick with it very well. Glad to hear there will be ACs this time!

  • LaDonna says:

I’m gonna give it another go. @mom2kchmwrm2001

  • Resa says:

Okay, I’m in! I’ve been chanting “GET. OUT. OF. BED!” every morning for about 2.5 weeks. Why is this so difficult?? Started out with kids crawling in bed with me…now I’m up between 6-6:15–waaaay before them at 7:15ish :)…going for 5:30 in a few weeks! I’m not a twit so won’t see you tweeters in the morning (that’s supposed to be funny not mean) 😉 but my sis and I are giving each other wake up calls! Thanks for all the inspiration!!!

  • Ellen says:

    I’m in! Can’t wait!

  • Allison says:

Count me in!! I tried in the fall, but didn’t hang in there very long. I’m very excited about the accountability captains, and regain my mornings!

  • micha says:

I’m in. I really need to get off my duff in the mornings and to start spending time in The Word. My twitter handle is tiamimi

  • Emily says:

I tried this last time, but hoping it sticks now that my baby is a tad bit older and sleeping better. 🙂

  • Jenn says:

I’m in too – not a Twitter user, but on FB and love the emails!

  • Kelly says:

I’m In, and super excited about this! 🙂

  • Tammy says:

Ok, I definitely NEED this right now…

  • Yeah!!! I’m in and can’t wait! Thanks so much for the encouragement!

    • jae Carpenter says:

Ok, so I need some help figuring out the twitter thing… i am set up and have tweeted what you said, but now what? Sorry…

  • This is just amazing! I look forward to getting to know you all throughout the challenge!

I’ll be the quiet, sorta grumpy one in the Twitter stream for a while. 🙂

    {not a natural AM person}

  • jami says:

I’m in. Want to honor God and be a blessing to my family and trust God to be my strength where I am weak. So much more I could say but I’m in is a good start. Thanks for doing this!

  • Tracy B. says:

I’m in! Heaven knows I need some accountability to leave my night owl ways behind and get fresh, wonderful starts in the morning! Thanks to all who are helping make this possible!!

  • I’m in!!! I have been getting up early pretty much since November, taking a couple weeks off in December and January when we moved states. It has changed my life!! I love it, and am so glad to finally have a morning routine, time to myself in the morning, and a scheduled time to spend with God!! All things I have never had as a mom!!

  • Debbie G says:

I just read Shopping for Time by the Girl Talk Blog girls and while I am usually an early riser, I am not a purposeful early riser. Looking forward to journeying with you all!

  • Renee says:

I am in also!! I also do not *get* twitter…have had an account for over a year, but will def need some help (have been following mostly on fb). I have been lurking since the new year and really need this. I have enjoyed this discipline in the past, but I am truly a night person. Ready to commit!

  • Tara Cherry says:

Well, I have watched it on twitter and now I guess I am in. I need to get more control and get myself back into the Word. And this looks like the place to be. Thanks for doing this. Committing and looking forward to the accountability.

  • Karen says:

I am back in too. Hope it isn’t too late to join in again! This does wonders for me! Love it and love that so many are participating!

  • Karen says:

    Woops, forgot my twitter id

  • Kisti says:

    I’m in!

  • Brandi says:

I am in. And really excited! YAY 2011 🙂

  • Lisa Austin says:

    I’m soo in! 🙂

  • Tiany says:

This is probably the area of my life that is most in need of change. Going to bed early and rising early is an area that I am least disciplined in and lacking consistency. Looking forward to taking the challenge with you all! This will be the perfect time for me to catch up with my current Bible Study!

  • Julie says:

    I’m in!

  • Noelle says:

I would love to participate, and will on my own, but I don’t have twitter. Is there a way to stay connected on facebook? I “liked” the page there.

  • Elizabeth says:

Just started this morning . . . dragging this afternoon. Having the mother of all colds doesn’t help. Excited about this journey, praying for the Holy Spirit to give me the strength to be faithful.

  • I already joined the Twiiter group, but count me in, too.

  • Meagan says:

I’m definitely in! So thankful for the encouragement and accountability. It’s good to have others to journey alongside!

  • Gabrielle says:

I’m joining. glad to put it in writing! 🙂 thank you for doing this!

  • Haley says:

I’m in 🙂 I’ve never done twitter before so i’m a little weary of becoming one of “those people” that are always on their phone or computer, But I think the accountability will help alot so we’ll see 🙂

  • Jessica says:

I’m joining in! I kinda dropped out of the last round, but I’m ready to start finding a new routine with two kids now.

  • Gracie says:

I’m in too!! I’ve wanted to do this for awhile and officially jumping in! I coincidentally wake up before my 2 kiddo sometimes and it is so nice to have some tine by myself to start the day. My son wakes up early and waking up before him can be early.

I just joined Twitter, so I’m trying to figure it all out! I feel “cool people” now. I’m @aubiesgirl

  • […] am hoping to start getting up early before my kids, to read and to study.  Check out the Inspired to Action – Maximize Your Mornings Winter Challenge for more […]

  • Heather says:

Looking forward to joining you again!! Not blogging lately, but maybe this will get me back in swing of things. Just what I need to continue along pulling me out of these wintertime blues.
Hugs & grat appreciation for continuing to share your journey with us!

I’ll give it a go. I desperately need to become a morning person instead of a night owl. Two of my four children (and my husband) are up and ready to go early in the morning. The other two aren’t far behind. Our days go so much better when I’m up and ready before them. I tend to stay up late getting things done, but then the time slips by way too fast and, before I know it, it’s midnight! I’m praying that 2011 is the year I turn it around.

  • I’m so not a morning person…never have been. I’m definitely a night owl (it’s 11:15pm as I type this). I saw this and thought…”Nah…I’m not ready yet.” And maybe I’m not, but I guess I’ll never know unless I try. I definitely want to work on going to bed earlier and getting up earlier (I have to get up at 7am no matter what when my kiddo wakes up).
Maybe the support is just what I need to get motivated!

What’s the official start date and is there a specific time we are to get up? Does it still count if I tweet hellomornings at 10am? 😉

(Oh my, I’m tired already just thinking about it.)

    • Kat says:

It starts now and there is no specific time. The bottom line goal is just to get up early enough to connect with God and let Him paint His truth on your heart before the frenzy of life hits. Even 5 minutes of prayer and Bible reading will impact our hearts and create a habit. And the habit is the goal…not the time.

I’m in! Life with my 4 month old has gotten a little hectic and I need some better routines in our life!

  • Rachel says:

I’m in! but I can’t figure out twitter at ALL. I have an account but haven’t been to the page in years and can’t find a darned thing. Will someone here please take pity on me and hold my hand through the process??

  • Adrienne says:

I am in again. Started in August then had a baby and holidays. Ready to get back to an awesome morning routine. Can’t wait!

  • Mari says:

I’m in..I read your post right after thinking about that I need to get up earlier. God has been reminding me for a while..It’s a little scary, since I’m afraid of failing..again..Have tried this before..But I will try again.:) By Gods grace I can do it! ( by the way, I’m from Norway:) )

    • Kat says:

Norway? So cool. Dont worry about failing. Just take tiny steps. 5 minutes early to pray and read a verse or two is a great way to start. Make it as simple as you need to in order to make it a habit. You can do it!

  • Anna says:

    I am in. 🙂

  • Selena says:

I’m not sure what all this entails, but I’m gonna give it a try. Part of my 3in30 goals is establishing a routine, and getting up earlier is part of that. We all are night owls, so I hope this helps.

    • Kat says:

The Maximize Your Mornings Challenge is suer flexible. The basic idea is just to challenge all of us to get us at least 5 minutes early to pray and read our Bibles and prepare our hearts for the day. Some people are getting up earlier to plan and exercise and have an extended time with God, but feel free to make it as simple as you need!

  • Rachel R. says:

*sigh* I hope I’m in, this time. I was all set to jump in, in December – and then I got put on bed rest at the very end of November. Now I have a baby due any day, so I am planning to jump in as soon as baby is born!

  • Christin says:

I’m in!!!! I miss my hello mornings and have been trying to get back for weeks. Looking forward to meeting all the new faces! 🙂
