GIVEAWAY! Motivation Monday: Friendship and My All Time Favorite Quote

By July 18, 2010General

Today is Motivation Monday! Tell us in the comments if you’ve taken action and get a chance to win today’s giveaway which is a copy of Lisa Whelchel’s new book “Friendship for Grownups: What I Missed and Learned Along The Way“!

Before becoming an author of 15 books, Lisa played the role of Blair on the popular 1980’s show Facts of Life. But if you’re anywhere near my age and had a tv in your house when you were growing up, I’m sure you already knew that.

In the book, she shares her struggle with cultivating close friendships and the lessons she learned. One key point she discussed is how trying to be “perfect” in order to attract people, actually worked like Teflon and kept her from deep relationships. Wisdom.

I’ll be giving away two copies of the book, so be sure to share how you are taking action.

Get all the details at the end of the post and find out who won last week’s prize.

My All-Time Favorite Quote

Since Lisa’s book is all about friendship, I thought I’d share one of my all time favorite quotes. It defines the kind of friend I want to be.

“Oh the comfort, the inexpressible comfort of feeling safe with a person, having neither to weigh thoughts nor measure words, but pouring them all out just as they are chaff and grain together. Certain that a faithful hand will take and sift them, Keep what is worth keeping and with the breath of kindness blow the rest away.”

-Dinah Craik

Isn’t that beautiful?

I got up early to read my Bible, but my elder son’s “Mommy Radar” sensed I was up, and he got up, too. Instead of stewing angrily, I scooped him into my lap and told him about what I was reading and praying for him and his brother. I guess God uses the early morning times to speak to us in more than one way, eh?

    • Avatar Katrina F says:

For the record, this was an anomaly in my response! I tend to just get frustrated and angry when my boys invade “my” time …

I’ve been getting up at 5:30 am (including the weekend), spending 30 minutes or more with the Lord, exercised (I loved the quickie workout), set the breakfast table and prepped lunches the night before and doubled or tripled 3 meals for future convenience. The best part: I have time to sit and have breakfast with my kids and we got to talk about the plans for the day without being in a rush – although we had to be places before 9 am every day. My days have been so much more relaxed. Thank you for the “maximize your mornings” workbook. It is wonderful!

I went on a date with my daughter, and another date with my husband (been to crazy to do this for awhile), spontaneously took my son to Dallas when he requested Sushi for his birthday meal and have been focusing on what the next steps in my life should be as I am in a season of change. These thoughts need to look like goals….soon….

  • Avatar Susan says:

I got up and read my bible and had devotions – I got an amazing touch today that I needed from the Lord. Our family is going through a healing time right now and from the book, “Streams in the Desert” I got a couple lines that really touched my heart: “So trust Him and never push away the instrument He is using, or you will miss the result of His work in your life.” Also, “Strange and difficult indeed, We may find it, But the blessings that we need, Is behind it.” Just wanted to share!

I planned out all our meals for this week (which hasn’t been done in a very long time!) Even though I got up later than planned, I still started my day with worship and read some of my Bible. Most days that that happened I would’ve just thrown in the towel because I got up too late. I’ve just found your blog, and I’m really enjoying it. Thank you!

I started a new Bible study with a group of friends, on “The Mission of Motherhood”, by Sally Clarkson. I actually took the time to sit down and read the verses in the Bible for the questions of Chapter 1, and thought about the exercises she recommends ๐Ÿ˜‰
On a home management level, our chore list is proving very useful, I think I have the final version now. And the meal plans are definitely keeping us on track. My husband and I revisited the budget too and made some adjustments, and I feel more in control of what goes where and how much. I like that we are committing down aspects of our routine now, so that when the chaos of new baby comes in in, gasp, 10 weeks, we’ll have something to fall back on.

(which is another goal…eating more as a family before my husband leaves for work.)

This week I decided to share the joy of School Supply Shopping with my kids via one-on-one lunch dates! Instead of facing the back-to-school crowds at the last minute with three kids vying for attention simultaneously, I set individual appointments with each one for lunch and shopping. Today was date number one: we had great, quality time together and revelled — uninterrupted — in the sights & sounds of Office Depot (my favorite store aside from Teacher Heaven). I think we just established an annual tradition.
